As of 2023, Pop Up Cinema has been around for ten years, throughout this decade we've brought our movable movie screen to all kinds of exciting places. On this page we'll summarize the highlights of our past so you get an impression of the things we've done so far.

A yearly event at theatre de Nieuwe Vorst. The zomerfilms are a popular event in Tilburg and almost always completely "sold out". (They're free to attend, but always full) During the summer we show films in the open air in the garden space of the theatre, it is usually a collection of high quality movies from various countries with some broader appeal but also an unique style and subject. For example the Korean film Parasite, the philosphical Manifeso, or the classic Stand by me.

Film for the little ones! Together with Spruit Tilburg we've hosted various movie screenings in libraries in and around Tilburg city. We've kept the prices of these screenings low and accompanied the movies with a conversation with the children about what they've seen and how to judge a film and write a review. 

Cinema in the club! Together with Club Smederij we've hosted various film screenings in their auditorium that's usually used to host dance events. The German-Iraqi documentary Raving Iran in 2018, the drama film Goldie in 2020 and the portrait of modern protestculture Everyday Rebellion in 2019 amongst many others.

Multiple times we've presented the Talent Talks at various locations: bite sized interviews with creatives. A moderator talks about the creative process, the work and the life of multiple makers that we invite to show their work and inspiration through images and short clips in front of an audience. From citypoet Onias Landveld to singer-songwriter Abee. We've presented these talks in the LocHal and theatre de Nieuwe Vorst. 

For the creators sessions, an event at theatre de Nieuwe Vorst where creators from various disciplines show off a part of their work like a teaser or preview, we've connected the organizers with filmmakers so that film was also represented in the line-up.

A cabinet of curiosities on the big screen

A new 'kind of festival' during the Tilburg Fair: the Kouwe Kermis.

From 21 to 30 July, kermis enthusiasts, kermis haters and everything in between can visit theatre de Nieuwe Vorst for a taste of something different. With the inner theatre garden as the heart of the festival, you can enjoy a program full of installations, performances, films, lectures, bands, art and spicy cotton candy for ten days.  

On the 23rd of July Pop Up Cinema presents the Kouwe Kermis Klutsblok during the festival: a short film block with 5 films that will leave you completely confused in a good wat. From animated projects that are visually as spectacular as they are elusive to eerie moving images that surprise you. Do you dare to enter the red salon during the Tilburg Fair? 

The Kermis Klutsblok can be seen continuously for free throughout the day of the Kouwe Kermis Festival.

This year the well-known open-air cinema area of ​​the Nieuwe Vorst will be the stage for an unique film program every Thursday evening in August. The summer films are chosen together with local filmmakers who will present their work and host the evening together with us. We start the program as soon as it gets dark around 8:30 pm in the main auditorium of the theatre due to bad weather this evening.

Buying a ticket is not necessary, you can just walk in. Be on time, because full is full and the summer movie nights are always very popular!

We start the program as soon as it gets dark around 9:30 pm in the courtyard of theater, but you can of course come and have a drink beforehand. In case of bad weather, we will move to the main auditorium, the show will always go on.

An unusual music documentary about an unusual celebrity  with a side program with performance band La Piratesse 

Performance band La Piratesse knows more than enough about soaring atmospheres, quality music and exuberant outfits. Creative all-rounder Inez Wolters' group brings you a rich mix of modern classical, to jazz and pop-rock, world music, dance, visuals, fashion design and spoken word. The indicator for a successful performance? As long as it grinds, alienates, cracks open your brain or makes your heart pound it's good. 

Partly influenced by David Bowie's character changes, this band swings mercilessly from poetic to rough and back again. This evening we go from the visual and musical spectacle on screen to that same energy on stage during this film-and-more evening.  

The film and side program will start this evening at 8:00 PM. Want to enjoy the Nachtzuster atmosphere earlier? From 5 p.m. we serve a delicious vegan main course for € 7.50 made by none other than chef Het Buurmeisje. Want to join for dinner? Be on time because we serve dinner as long as supplies last.  

the overarching theme of the collaboration between the Nachtzuster and Pop Up Cinema in 2023 is art. If you organize an event between artistic studio spaces, art is of course unavoidable. A theme that lends itself perfectly to the silver screen. This year, the Pop Up Cinema Foundation, in collaboration with local creators, will provide a series of unique film experiences around the theme of art and creation. 

From documentaries about the eternal search for a 'eureka!' moment in the creative process to animated films painted with love from frame-to-frame. We take you through the camera lens to the world of creation in de Nachtzuster.

Het Concreet

Noumenon and A Temporal Brace are two short films by Anneroos Goosen and Daniel Cross. A diptych that performs the A and B sides of the album Strangely similar to the original by Het Concreet. On Saturday evening, October 21st, these two short films and the new album will be presented in the studio of Het Concreet in Tilburg. This in combination with an intimate studio session with wild frequencies from musicians Mathijn den Duijf (tape & electronics), Mathijs Leeuwis (tape & electronics), Daniel Cross (drums & bells) and Roberto Pistolesi (drums).  

Noumenon and A Temporal Brace both play with the world of magnetic tape in their own way: an analogue carrier of sound, including magnetic particles and electrical voltages. A world in which the difference between original and copy, and copy of the copy, is blurring and rapidly losing relevance. The films encourage us to surrender to this new reality, which Jean Baudrillard's philosopher sees as a universe 'strangely similar to the original'.  After the film screening, the album will be presented through a live performance.

Landpark Assisië

Pop Up Cinema will be located at Landpark Assisië on Saturday, November 25th. Together with performance company Zwermers we will provide an evening-filling program including (short) film.

BABA and NOBU are two short films in a series of three short documentaries created in collaboration with fashion designer Lisa Konno. This trilogy features stylized portraits of migrant fathers in the Netherlands.

Blok and Konno were surprised by how social documentaries are often presented with stern seriousness and realism, by contrast they want to show how aesthetics and humor can also make a meaningful contribution to the genre. They shift the focus from what is told to how it is told because they believe that that’s the area where the documentary genre has the opportunity to differentiate itself from journalism.

NOBU is a short film about former karate champion and Japanese immigrant Nobuaki Konno. His daughter, fashion designer Lisa Konno, talks to him on camera about their cultural differences. 

In the film he wears a collection of clothes that Lisa made for him, based on his Dutch rain suits and Japanese kimonos. This collection reflects on Dutch and Japanese identity, caricatures, cultural misunderstandings and the hype surrounding Japan. At the same time it sketches an intimate portrait of her father as an immigrant. The designs are based on items from Nobu's closet, such as his old promotional T-shirts, vintage kimonos and his favorite raincoat. NOBU is a film that examines the complexity of migration from the perspective of a migrant who has never experienced it as such.

The short documentary film BABA is a stylized portrait of one of the first Turkish immigrants in the Dutch cultural sector, Ceylan Utlu. Ceylan moved from Turkey to the Netherlands over forty years ago to enrich his left-wing ideology with Western knowledge. After receiving the education he wanted, he wanted to travel back to make himself useful to his own country. His half-Turkish, half-Dutch daughter wonders why things didn't go the way he had planned. In BABA Ceylan is interviewed by his daughter amid a colorful fashion collection inspired by his life. Topics like immigration, integration, relationships and loneliness are discussed during this conversation between father and daughter.

Filmmaker Sarah Blok writes and directs narrative stories, her work mainly features the complexity of our modern society. She focuses on investigating social dynamics and how we as humans navigate them. She often views these themes through the lens of, for example, gender, income, origin and class.

BABA and NOBU are two films in a series of three short documentaries created in collaboration with fashion designer Lisa Konno. This trilogy focuses on the out-of-the-box stories of migrants in the Netherlands.

Sarah's work has been featured at the IFFR, Winterthur Film Festival and the Dutch Design Week and has been shown in the Stedelijk Museum, Rijksmuseum and the Tropenmuseum. 

With Project Baraguda, musician Rob van Barschot immerses you in his new work on the GUDA, a unique drum instrument that can best be described as a hybrid of the tongue drum and the handpan. Earlier this year, Rob played at the medieval fantasy festival Castlefest.

This question was asked to fifteen members of Huis van Vervoering, a creative breeding ground for performing arts for people over 55 in The Hague. The outcome: a group portrait about the versatility of these people, who they are, who they were, and what inhabiting an aging body means for your freedom of expression. Zwermers has been working on the ongoing project Pan~// Catwalk, about clothing and identity, since 2018

April is the month of Philosophy. Every year in April, philosophical nights, programs, lectures, debates and festivals are organized around a certain theme. 

According to philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, the philosopher must "descend into the old chaos and feel at home there." This year, the month of Philosophy is centered around the theme of chaos!  On Saturday the 13th of April, Tilburg University organizes the annual Night of Philosophy in theatre the Nieuwe Vorst. Pop Up Cinema joins the festivities with a film program about everything chaotic. What this will be exactly remains a secret for now.

Werkwarenhuis

The Werkwarenhuis in Den Bosch will be transformed into a cinema and theater on Saturday the 25th of May 2024 for the second edition of the CineMachine Festival. CineMachine invites you to explore the world of film and beyond with screenings, music, performances, creators, and more.

Starting at 1:00 PM, immerse yourself in one of the many performances, attend a masterclass, or relax and enjoy a selection of short (student)films. CineMachine is an interdisciplinary film festival for both creators and film enthusiasts.

A multi-vocal triptych through peripheral sites of urban infrastructure: a data center, a ring road, and a run-down mall. All three sites were built with certain worldviews: visions of the future and  US-influenced promises of progress that didn't turn out to be the utopias they presented themselves as. Through multi-lingual texts, a site-specific soundtrack, 16mm and 3D images, the spaces and their implications are subjectively mapped, poeticized and questioned. A poetic materialism of decay, renewal, remembering and projecting, "Center, Ring, Mall" is perhaps a mourning, but one that desires and demands a rebirth.

Director's statement:
It kept raining every day that summer, but the fall would be beautiful. "Center, Ring, Mall" is a collaborative attempt to cinematically capture and address three infrastructural sites around Amsterdam. The first is a large data center, home to countless Big Tech servers and located in the "Science Park" area: a key site in the history of the internet and node for global traffic. The second: the ring road highway surrounding the city, built in the second half of the 20th century and a monument to the citizen-as-car-owner and the city divided into interior and periphery. The third is a worn-down mall at the edge of town that's fallen out of fashion: a ruin of last century's capitalist and consumerist optimism.

Rather than aiming to produce intellectual knowledge or research, I was more interested in playing with ways of sensing and feeling these places. Across the different voices, textures, and mediums, I wanted to keep a concern with urban materiality and its affects at the core. None of these places is exclusively good or bad – but they're most definitely not neutral. In the end, I see this project as a way to collectively reclaim agency over these vast, inhuman sites and systems.

During CineMachine, Pop Up Cinema will screen the experimental short film Center, Ring, Mall by Mateo Vega.

Mateo Vega is a filmmaker and artist from Peru, who grew up in Amsterdam. Mateo's work focuses on the subjective experience of (urban) space and the politics, history, and future connected to landscapes, architecture, and infrastructure. Mateo's films and installations have been shown internationally at festivals and venues such as MoMA and the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

In Center, Ring, Mall, urban infrastructure in America takes center stage: a data center, a ring road, and a decaying shopping mall. All three locations were built with a certain worldview: visions of the future and promises of progress that were not fulfilled. Instead, these places have become dilapidated examples of empty promises. Through multilingual texts, site-specific music, 16mm, and 3D images, the spaces are mapped and questioned on film.

CineMachine presents several short films by third-year students from the St. Joost School of Art and Design. From fictional films about the implications of ghosts to a look at what it’s like to live in isolation, a wide selection of exciting new work will be shown on the big screen.

CineMachine Festival // film, performance & more

From June 15 to 23, an exhibition for the Illustrada Festival will pop up in the city center of Tilburg, the Heyhoef shopping center, and Wagnerplein with large-scale illustrations made by local, national, and international artists. But who creates these illustrations, and how does this work come about?

On Wednesday evening, June 19, we will take you into the wonderful world of illustration and animation at NS16 with a special Illustrada side program. We will chat with the Breda-based creator Cheyenne Goudswaard and the Tilburg based illustrator Jill Peeters.

Dit evening is organized in collaboration with Playgrounds en Wobby Club. 

This will be an english language event. The evening and artist talks will be hosted by Charlie Jermyn.

Charlie Jermyn is a writer from Dublin living in Amsterdam. He writes essays and prose on travel, landscapes, music, and art. His work has been published by Het Hem, Bog Bodies Press, Onomatopee, and The Irish Times. He is the host of the radio series 'More Poetry is Needed' on Stranded FM Utrecht. 

Cheyenne Goudswaard is a Dutch illustrator and animation filmmaker. Her focus is drawn to the dirt in the corner and the neighbour that no one wants – the unnoticed and misunderstood. She wants to peek beyond the front door to discover what is hidden in the backyard. Her fascination with human behaviour, how we shape our lives and how we relate to the world is expressed into soft, intimate and relatable illustrations and animations. She graduated with a Master degree in Animation from MIVC St. Joost School of Art and Design in 2023.

That same year, she won the Animation Talent Award, sponsored by the Keep an Eye Foundation. Her short film ‘Ik Ben Hier’ (I Am Here) is being screened at film festivals internationally. She won the Best Animated Film Award at Sehsüchte Film Festival with I Am Here. In 2024, Cheyenne was selected for Playgrounds Next Talent Program to further develop her future projects.

Jill Peeters is based in Tilburg and works as a background and visdev artist for international studios like Submarine, Il Luster and The Film Kitchen.

She is really into building fantastical worlds and bringing them to life with color and composition. Her work is inspired by the experiences and emotional bonds she shares with people in her life. She worked on feature animation films like Benjamin Bat and Fox and Hare Save the Forest.

Pop Up Cinema x Illustrada Festival: meet the artists

On the last three Thursdays of August and the first Thursday of September, Pop Up Cinema will once again be hosting summer film screenings at Theater De Nieuwe Vorst. These evenings, the garden will serve as the main setting where you can enjoy a unique outdoor film program!

We will screen a short film by a young filmmaker as an amuse-bouche for the main movie. We asked this young director: which feature film works well with your own short film and why? The result is an intriguing program with surprising choices and interesting combinations. The filmmakers will introduce the film(s) on the evening itself.

In case of sunshine, the screenings will be in the garden of the theatre, and in case of rain, in the auditorium. The screenings will always take place, no matter the weather.

The program will start around 21:00, as soon as it gets dark, but you can come earlier to enjoy a drink. The summer films are a pay-what-you-want event. No ticket purchase is necessary; you can just walk in. This is a popular event, so make sure to arrive early so secure your seat as space is limited.

In a dried-up sea, a humanoid amphibian searches for water amidst the ruins of a fallen world. The ground filled with plastic waste, inhabited by fantastic creatures, circus freaks, and a pink hand with overly long nails. In this dreamscape, the sound of gongs forms a heartbeat that navigates us as viewers within the eclectic labyrinth of our own debris and waste. Wrap yourself in this occult cocoon and sail over a sea of dried-up plastic.

A hopeless demise, or a build-up to a rebirth? Various art disciplines reach their peak in this intimate fantasy about the slow extinction of humanity.

Animalia Paradoxa - Trailer

This film screening is part of a series of three screenings for the 2024 edition of the Murf/Murw festival. Murf/Murw was founded in 2018 as a fanzine. Since 2020, they've organized a yearly festival in the city centre of Tilburg, focusing on experimental theatre, music, visual art, and film, each year with a new theme. This year's theme is The Ship of Theseus.

The films are screened at a special location, the Broekhovense kerk, a church building in Tilburg located at Bisschop Zwijsenstraat 3.

21-year-old non-binary performance artist Gena creates extravagant creations for her performances and social media accounts using duct tape, scrap materials, and make-up. On unbelievably high heels, she roams through the streets and metro stations of Moscow like an alien, protesting the war in Ukraine and violence against the LGBTQI+ community. In a country where being openly different is quickly seen as clandestine homosexual propaganda, this is life-threatening.

In Queendom, winner of the NEXT:WAVE Award at CPH:Dox, we follow Gena from her birthplace Magadan – a city in the far east of Russia, notorious for its gulag past – to Moscow and witness the difficulties she encounters daily. We see her in drag, as a student at a 'Beauty Academy', and listen in when she calls her grandparents, who raised her. Their poignant conversations reveal both misunderstanding and unconditional love.

Images of Gena's dark and evocative performances punctuate the story, adding an extra emotional layer. Sometimes they are almost literally breathtaking.

So Unreal is an essay film that explores the world of cyberspace cinema both historically and philosophically. 

So Unreal is a psychedelic trip through cinematic time, space, and memory, using fluorescent visuals and an impressive montage to examine the rising fear of technology at the end of the millennium. Under the soft tones of Debbie Harry (lead singer of Blondie), take Morpheus's red pill and transport yourself to the nostalgic times of The Matrix, Terminator 2, and Existenz.
